“To infinity, and beyond…” Buzz Lightyear (Toy Story, 1995 – Disney)

2014 saw a resurgence in U.S. manufacturing. That resurgence was fueled by a number of factors. Lower domestic energy prices, specifically natural gas and oil, drove the costs of doing business down. The growing demand for reduced product development and production lead times, compounded by an increasing labor cost in China, has also continued to make offshore options less attractive. These two factors along with a resilient U.S. automotive sector and a boom in domestic oil and gas production, buoyed by the various shale plays across the U.S., sparked an increase in demand for U.S. manufacturing. To be sure, these trends should continue to be positive influences on domestic manufacturing, but this “mini-boom” is a time to position for the future and beyond; the next set of factors to influence the industry and its trajectory. Due to these positive changes to the manufacturing environment, Rapid Mold Solutions has taken up a number of initiatives to position itself for future growth opportunities. In an effort to get ahead of the “curve”, RMS has made, and is planning to make, several additions to the capacities it has to offer. These exciting developments include a new facility to diversify the services and value proposition it has to offer a growing, diverse customer base. The new facility will allow RMS to offer prototype molding as well as low to mid-volume production molding to our clients. 4 presses ranging from 90 to 300 tons enable us to mold a relatively wide range of part sizes, and if necessary, cavitation. To complement the injection molding machines, post-molding operations including hand-painting, assembly adhesive application, pad-printing, and high-resolution laser jet printing have also been added for our customers’ needs. As the demand for plastics in the automotive industry increases and the benefits of the Utica shale formation manifest, benefitting the plastics industry as a whole, RMS is positioned to provide the service our clients demand. Rapid Mold Solutions has added a new Agie Charmilles Cut 30P wire EDM. This machine tool will enable faster production times as well as the ability to handle larger parts. In addition to the new wire EDM, a higher capacity, DoAll hydraulic saw has been added to the facility to allow us to process raw materials more quickly and with more precision in an attempt to further reduce lead times. Rapid Mold Solutions is also discussing several more capital expenditures to increase plant efficiencies, reduce lead times, and to improve cost structure to our customers. Plans have literally also been drawn to complete an addition to the main building itself to create a contained material storage area. This area, which should break ground with the break in Erie’s winter weather, will allow for more manufacturing space and a firm handle on material inventories. The market demands cost-cutting and lead time reductions; the new capital investments will enable RMS to maintain a competitive advantage in that environment. To serve our customers’ needs, beyond the current market conditions, Rapid Mold Solutions is creating a value proposition that is second to none. In-house tool design, creative mold-making and part-machining options, in-house quality lab with CMM and vision system capabilities, plastic injection molding, FDM printing, and post-molding assembly and decorating options all create a “one-stop shop” for making your next project a successful one. Give us a call, we look forward to discussing your next project with you!
